Charles’s story starts with a diagnosis of hepatic encephalopathy, a condition that temporarily impairs brain function in those with advanced liver disease. Prior to admission, he was fully independent living in the Gardens of Oakley community. When he was admitted to our rehabilitation center on 10/30/23, he faced significant challenges, requiring maximum assistance for transfers and completely losing the ability to walk.
Charles faced confusion and dependence for daily activities in his initial days, including mobility, communication and problem-solving. However, as the fog of confusion lifted, Charles revealed a determination that would become the driving force behind his recovery.
Hepatic Encephalopathy Rehab Milestones
Independence Regained: Charles regained independence through focused rehabilitation efforts and his unwavering commitment. He conquered stairs and achieved independence in transfers, bathing and dressing.
Mobility Improvement: Charles progressed from depending on therapists for mobility to walking independently.
Leadership and Motivation: Charles emerged as a motivator for his fellow patients, spreading positivity and becoming a source of joy within our community.
